Construction at La Défense began iin 1958 and by the time I first
visited it in 1984 bulding was on to the "third generation" of
skyscrapers. It was a new development on a scale we had not had in Britain
and even now considerably more impressive than the Isle of Dogs in many
respects.
I was also impressed by the contrast between La Défense and parts of the surrounding areas of the banlieue, a surprising mix of the rural and the futuristic towers of public housing. But I spent too long with a French photographer in one of the rural bars to take many pictures!
